Online shop and marketing for retailers

An online shop for retailers is worthwhile when it strengthens your local business instead of competing with large mail-order retailers on the lowest price. We connect shop floor, shop window, Google and online shop into one presence where the stock levels are right and customers come back.

Customers check on Google whether the product is available nearby and find the wrong opening hours. An online shop was set up years ago, but stock is maintained by hand and is rarely correct. The shop window changes twice a year. And there is the question of whether the shop meets the accessibility requirements that have applied since June 2025.

We start with local visibility: a Google Business Profile with range and opening hours that are correct. Then we connect till, inventory management and online shop so that stock levels are synchronised automatically. Click and collect, that is, ordering online and picking up in store, brings online customers into your shop. Shop window and social media tell the same story. We build the online shop to be accessible from the start.

What retailers should know about online shops and visibility

Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz: what has applied since June 2025

Since 28 June 2025, online shops aimed at consumers must be accessible. The legal basis is the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (German Accessibility Strengthening Act), BFSG for short. In practice this means: the shop must be operable by keyboard, work with screen readers, and have sufficient contrast and understandable forms, right through to completing the order. It also needs information on accessibility. Micro-enterprises with fewer than ten employees and no more than €2 million annual turnover or balance sheet total are exempt. If you want to grow, you should still build accessibly, because a later conversion is more expensive. Legal advice clarifies the individual case.

Google Business Profile: your shop window on the web

Before customers set off, they check on Google whether you are open and stock what they are looking for. A well-maintained business profile with correct opening hours, including on public holidays, current photos of shop and goods, answered questions and reviews often decides whether someone comes to you or to the competition. Posts about promotions and new arrivals appear directly in the search results. If you connect stock from inventory management, products can also be shown as available locally. The profile costs nothing, but needs regular maintenance, otherwise it becomes outdated faster than any poster.

Connecting inventory management instead of maintaining everything twice

The most common reason why small retailers' online shops are left to stagnate is double work. Every item has to be created in the till and the shop, every sale booked out twice. At the latest when an item sells online that has long gone from the store, the enthusiasm fades. The solution is an interface: product data, prices and stock come from inventory management or the till system, the shop displays them, and sales flow back automatically. Many common till systems offer interfaces for this. We check what your system can do and connect the parts instead of building a second set of data.

Connecting online and in store

A retailer's online shop does not have to beat the big platforms. Its strength is what they lack: advice, same-day pickup, exchanges in store, a face behind the goods. Click and collect brings customers into the store, where they often buy something extra. A customer account or newsletter keeps regular customers up to date on new arrivals. QR codes in the shop window lead directly to the right product in the online shop outside opening hours. This makes the online shop an extension of the store, not its competitor.

Questions from retailers

How much does an online shop for retailers cost?

At Trendtreiber, an online shop with payment, shipping and connection to inventory management starts at €15,000. The price depends mainly on the number of items, the interfaces to till and inventory management, and features such as in-store pickup. Local visibility with a properly set-up Google Business Profile starts at €690. All prices are guide prices, net, plus VAT. After the free initial consultation you receive a fixed-price quote.

Does my online shop have to be accessible?

Yes, if you sell to consumers and are not a micro-enterprise, your shop must have been accessible since 28 June 2025 under the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (German Accessibility Strengthening Act). Micro-enterprises are businesses with fewer than ten employees and no more than €2 million annual turnover or balance sheet total. This affects the entire ordering process, forms, product images with alternative text and keyboard operation. We check existing shops and list the changes needed.

Is an online shop worthwhile for a small business?

An online shop is worthwhile for a small business if it is connected to the store and runs without double maintenance. If you offer special goods, advice or regional products, you will find customers online beyond your own town. For some retailers, a well-maintained Google Business Profile with reservation and in-store pickup is enough to start with. We honestly recommend what suits your range, even if that means less work for us.

How do I get found in “near me” searches?

What matters is a complete and well-maintained Google Business Profile. This includes the right primary category, correct address and opening hours, current photos, a description of your range and regular reviews with replies. Consistent details on your website, in directories and on social media strengthen the search engine's trust. Local ads also help. Nobody can seriously guarantee a particular position, but your chances rise considerably.

Do you also design shop windows?

Yes, we design window graphics, posters, stands and signage and have them produced and installed by our regular print and sign-making partners. An annual plan based on your seasons and promotions and aligned with the online shop and social media makes sense. This way the customer sees the same campaign in the window, on Instagram and in the newsletter. Design of printed materials starts at €390, trade fair and outdoor advertising at €1,800.
